Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers
TBD. If you are close to the Tuscaloosa area and want to volunteer, please stand by. People are being discouraged from entering the area right now, but your assistance will be needed in the very near future. It is best to volunteer as a part of an organized effort rather than as an individual; more information will be provided.

UPDATE: 5/3 Tuscaloosa County Spontaneous Volunteer Management Team will host the Volunteer Reception Center at St. Mathias Episcopal Church at 2310 Skyland Boulevard East in Tuscaloosa from Monday, May 2 – Friday, May 6 from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  ALL individuals wishing to volunteer should report here to sign up and find out about volunteer needs available, and some volunteers will be placed immediately.  Depending on your skill set, your information may be taken, and you could be contacted once a volunteer need becomes available.

Tuscaloosa public library is seeking SLIS students to volunteer to help with post-disaster operation of the library.  The library did not sustain any damage.  However, the demand for services is unprecedented at this time.  The library is short-staffed as several employees are engaged in dealing with property damage and relocation.  Demand will increase for services as the community seeks to gain access to online FEMA claims processes and continued Internet access for those left without connectivity.  If you wish to volunteer please do the following:

1.             Contact Gary DeGreen at gdegreen@tuscaloosa-library.org or 205-758-1735 for application.

2.            Wait for TPL to contact you to arrange a schedule.

For more information about volunteering, please contact the City of Tuscaloosa’s volunteer line at 205-248-5045, or by simply dialing 211.

UPDATE: 5/2: Janet Zeana at FOCUS on Senior Citizens of Tuscaloosa County.

They are swamped with phone calls and have many seniors coming to the center experiencing some stress.  At the moment they have about 35 people that have not reported to work.  They are asking for volunteers who are willing to come to their facility and "hang out" with the seniors and play pool, cards, and talk with them to ease their stress and fears.  They may also need some volunteers to answer phones and just be a good ear for seniors calling in stressed about the situation.  If you wish to volunteer go to FOCUS at:

1920 6th Street Tuscaloosa, AL 35401
